If you were to ask anyone off the street what they know about the Phoenix area, chances are, they’d say something like, “It’s hot there.” And let’s be honest—they wouldn’t be wrong. The Sonoran Desert heat is a big part of the Phoenix experience, and it has a big impact on Phoenix life, especially during its height, from about May to October.
But what about the rest of the year? The fact is, the weather in the Phoenix area is actually quite beautiful when it’s not sweltering hot outside. This is especially true in the late winter and early spring—from about February to mid-April—when highs are typically in the 70s, lows are in the 50s-60s, and the sunshine is still abundant.
Wondering how to make the most of that beautiful weather? We’ve got a few ideas.
Take a hike
The Phoenix area offers many nearby mountains with hiking opportunities, all varying in difficulty and skill level. From famous Camelback Mountain in Phoenix proper, with its challenging hiking trails and spectacular view, to the towering Superstition Mountains to the East, with trails regularly traveled by even the youngest children, the mountains of the area offer incredible outdoor opportunities for locals and visitors alike. If you’ll be hiking in Arizona, no matter the forecast, wear sunscreen, take plenty of water with you, and stay on the marked trails.
Start a garden
If you’re going to do any gardening from your Phoenix home, now is the time to start. You might even be lucky enough to have a little rain to help you along. Summer days are usually too hot and too long to allow plants to thrive, so the sooner you start, the better!
Go to a spring training game
Over a dozen teams play spring training games in the Phoenix area, simply because of the beautiful weather. Starting in the end of February and continuing throughout March, you’ll be able to get a jump start on summer without the oppressive heat.
Clean out your house
Although your Arizona home is probably well air-conditioned, if you need to do any deep cleaning or organization projects in your home, you’ll probably be outside for at least part of it. This means that you should definitely take “spring cleaning” seriously, because you don’t want to be stuck hauling things around in 100+ degree heat! (Bonus tip: if you’re looking for a place to store things you don’t need anymore, consider a Phoenix storage unit. There are even climate-controlled options if you have items that might be sensitive to the elements.)
Outdoor shopping
In the summer, outdoor shopping venues try to keep the heat down with shade and misting systems, but the truth is, you’ll never enjoy outdoor shopping in Phoenix as much as you will in the early spring. Check out Kierland Commons or Scottsdale Quarter, both in Scottsdale, or Santan Village, in Gilbert, for amazing outdoor shopping experiences.
There’s no better time to get outside in Phoenix, so what are you waiting for? Take advantage of the beautiful weather, and enjoy the spring before it’s gone.
