Creating an Efficient Home

Your home should be your safe haven: the place where you always feel relaxed and comfortable. It’s the place where real life happens, where memories are made, and where relationships are built.

Of course, there’s also plenty that has to be done around our homes. We work hard to keep them running smoothly, but everything from the morning routine with the kids to the weekly bathroom deep-clean can end up taking a significant amount of time.

With a little organization, you can turn your home into a more efficient space—one that makes it a little easier for you to get through those mundane tasks. Ready for our top tips?

In the bedroom

Your day starts in your bedroom, so make sure it’s maximized for efficiency. If possible, keep personal electronics (ahem—cell phones) out of your bedroom. It’s so easy to get sucked down the black holes of social media and email before even getting out of bed. Keeping your phone outside your room will help avoid that temptation.

Also, try to keep your bedroom free of clutter. This is where a lot of your personal items live, and it can be difficult to find what you need in a perpetually messy room. If you find it hard to find a place for everything, you may have too much stuff! Consider donating or selling some of it, or even just moving some of it to a self-storage unit.

In the kitchen

Make sure that commonly used items are the most accessible, and make sure items that are used together are stored together (e.g. put everything you need to fix your morning cup of coffee within arm’s reach of the coffee maker). Similarly, make it easy for members of your family to find what they need as well. If your kids are constantly asking you to get them drinks, move the cups within their reach, and find a good water dispensing solution that works for you.

Like in the bedroom, clutter is always going to slow you down (and stress you out). Spend a Saturday cleaning out your kitchen cabinets, making sure you aren’t storing anything you don’t use regularly. This is a great time to rethink your kitchen organization, too; small changes like keeping the spices next to the stove or the silverware next to the dishwasher will make your life easier in the long run.

In entryways

Many homes have multiple ways of entering/exiting. Try to focus on the one you use the most. Look at the space you have to work with and think about what you could do to make it more functional. Are you always scrambling for socks or shoes before you leave? A couple baskets for each right by the entryway could make all the difference. Need a place to put all your mail? Hang a basket on the wall for the important stuff, and put a trash can underneath it for the junk.
Always throwing your purses or bags on the ground? Hang a couple hooks on the wall to keep everything well organized (you can get ones that don’t have to be drilled in and won’t damage the paint). Don’t forget to include one for your keys! Even these simple changes can help make coming and going much easier, making for a more efficient life.

In the family room

Here, the key is going to be storage and organization. Designate places for the items that usually clutter up your space, like magazines or shoes, and for things that get lost easily, like remote controls. If you’ve got lots of extra blankets or other clutter around, buy a few nice looking baskets to keep in the corner; they will keep everything looking clean and contained. When everything is easy to find, your life with run a lot more smoothly.

Your home is all about relaxation, but that doesn’t mean it shouldn’t be efficient, too. In fact, taking some steps to make your home more efficient will also make it a more enjoyable place to be.
