Smart Kitchen Storage: 7 Tips to Make the Most of Your Space

You know the kitchen is the heart of your home. It’s where your family gathers to cook, eat, chat, and relax. Or at least, that’s the theory. Of course, if your kitchen is cluttered or crowded, you won’t really be able to do any of that.

A neat, organized kitchen can really make your home feel peaceful and well cared for. Of course, not everyone is so lucky as to have tons of cabinet and counter space in their kitchen. We’ve come up with seven tips that will help you make the most of whatever space you have in the kitchen, so that you can really start to enjoy it!

1. Go vertical.

Shallow dishes and pans aren’t really meant to be stacked horizontally on top of each other. Use pan organizers, or install dowel rods in your cabinets, to create storage space that will allow you to store this things vertically, on their sides. It’ll save you a lot of space—and a lot of headache when you’re searching for right right pan!

2. Get a clean slate.

It’s hard to get organized when you have unused dishes, expired foods, or unwanted small appliances taking up space. Clear everything out of your kitchen, and toss or donate the items that you don’t need or want anymore.

3. Use other storage spaces.

Don’t think that a kitchen item absolutely has to stay in the kitchen. If you have a small kitchen appliance or gadget that you hardly ever use, store it in a nearby closet, or in a cabinet that is difficult to access. Most of the time, you won’t even miss it, but when you need it, it won’t be far!

4. Use add ons.

Browse the organization aisles in your favorite store to see your options when it comes to kitchen organization. Small shelves that fit inside cabinets, canned food organizers, and holders for your pot lids can go a long way in making your kitchen feel put together and organized. Make sure you measure your spaces well before you go shopping!

5. Eliminate “drop zones.”

Chances are, you’ve got a space or two on your kitchen counter that has become a “drop zone” for all kinds of messes: junk mail, school papers, bills, random sticky notes, you name it. Try to get to the root of the problem to find out how you can get rid of those drop zones for good, thereby freeing up counter space and making your kitchen feel much more open and uncluttered.

6. Use counter space wisely.

You don’t want your counters to feel cluttered, but that doesn’t mean they have to be empty all the time! Put your counters to good use with utensil holders, spice racks, or other gadgets that could save you valuable storage space.

7. Solve your “under the sink” problems.

The space under your sink is usually one of the largest storage spaces in your kitchen—and often, it’s also the most difficult to organize. Depending on how much space you have, you could use drawer organizers under there to keep your sponges and brushes handy. You could also use risers to keep all your cleaning products and detergents in plain sight.

Your kitchen doesn’t have to be cluttered or chaotic. Make some small changes to make the space work for you, and you’ll be enjoying your clean kitchen in no time.
