Storing a Vehicle? Here’s What You Need to Know

If you’re putting something in self-storage, it’s because you want it to be safe and protected. This is true for almost any of your belongings, but it is especially true for anything that is large and valuable, like a vehicle.

There are many reasons why you might want to store a vehicle at a self-storage facility. Maybe you have an extra car or collector’s car that you can’t fit in your own garage, and your neighborhood association restricts street parking. Maybe you have a car that you want to fix up “someday,” but you’re not sure when you’ll get around to it. Whatever the reason, self-storage can provide you with a secure storage option for your vehicle, for as long as you need it.

Of course, storing a vehicle is quite different from storing your other belongings. Here are some tips to make sure your vehicle stays in tip-top shape, no matter how long you keep it in storage.

Prep it Well.

Especially if the car is currently functioning, and you’ll want to use it again soon, make sure the car is in good shape when you put it in storage. Make sure all the fluids have been changed recently. Keep the gas tank full, since that will prevent rust. (Use a fuel stabilizer for long-term storage.) If you’re storing the car for a long time, and won’t be driving it at all, consider putting it up on jacks so you can take the tires off; otherwise, the tires may develop flat spots. Make sure all doors and windows are closed to prevent dust and critters from getting inside the car while it’s being stored.

Inside or Out?

Many self-storage facilities have units that will accommodate certain sizes of cars. Of course, you may pay a little extra for the unit, especially if you need a larger unit for your particular vehicle. An outdoor space may save you money, but it will also leave your car more exposed to the elements. Think about what your storage needs are, and how long your vehicle will be in storage, as you make the decision about where to store it.

Keep it insured.

Sure, it’s a pain to pay insurance on a car that isn’t even being used, but if there’s a gap in your coverage, the insurance company may end up charging you more in the long run. Keep the insurance active to avoid any problems.

Keep it Accessible.

One of the great things about self-storage is that you can keep your belongings close by, while still keeping them out of the way. This is an especially great benefit for a large item like a car. Find a storage facility that you’ll be able to visit often, so you can check on your car whenever you want. Also, ideally, you would drive the car at least a few miles each month, so keeping it close by will make that easier.

Find a Facility with Good Security.

You don’t want anything to happen to your car (or anything you store, for that matter). Do your research and find a storage facility that is very secure, with gated entry, constant surveillance, and well-lit areas. Don’t take a chance when your car is at stake!
