Amidst all of the excitement and giddiness that comes when a couple decides to move in together, it’s sometimes easy to overlook a very important consideration: how to take the possessions of both people and move it all into one space.
 
In some cases, merging two households can be complicated and messy. But, if both parties are willing to work together and spend some time planning ahead, it doesn’t have to be difficult. Here are a few ideas on how to best combine your stuff when you move in together:
 

Open Communication

 
The best place to start when moving in together is with some good dialog about expectations and concerns. This should be an exciting and happy time, so you don’t want to put a damper on it by getting too serious or argumentative. However, you’ll definitely save yourself from some fights down the road by communicating up front.
 

Identify Duplicates

 
Next, make a list of any and all duplicate items. Spend some time deciding which of the two items is in the best condition and will last the longest. Some of the most common duplicate items include beds, couches, tables, microwaves, washers, dryers, coffee makers, can openers and blenders.
 

Plan Out Your Rooms

 
Having a plan in place as you begin to combine possessions and living arrangements is always a good idea. This can help you both to have a more realistic idea of what is going to fit and what is actually going to work the best in your new home together. Even if one of you is moving into the other’s home, it will make a difference if you both have a voice in how things will work moving forward.
 

Buy a Few New Things

 
One idea that can help both people feel more comfortable as you merge households is to buy a couple of new items for the home that you choose and decide on together. Consider buying new dishes, a new sofa or even some art that harmonizes and compliments both of your senses’ of style.
 

You Don’t Have to Say Goodbye

 
There will inevitably be some items that you will both want to hang onto even though you don’t have the space or the need for yet. The good news is, you don’t have to get rid of those items. Move them into storage until the time is right. It could be that you eventually move into a bigger home down the road and will be able to incorporate these stored items into your décor.
