Furniture Storage During a Remodel

Remodeling your home is an exciting time. You’re looking forward to big changes that will make your home feel new again. Sure, it’ll take a lot of work, but with careful planning and a little patience, it’ll pay off in the end.

Of course, in the meantime, you have to put up with a home in disarray. Depending on what area of your home you’re remodeling, you may have to move furniture or other belongings to make room for workers and equipment. You also might want to move things for protection’s sake: dust and paint could damage your belongings, and you certainly don’t want to add the cost of replacing your furniture to the cost of your remodel.

So what are your options for furniture storage during a remodel? Here are a few:

Rearrange

Pushing things to the side or shoving them into temporary homes is probably the first thing you’ll consider. It’s certainly the simplest option, but not always the best. If your remodel will be going on for weeks or months, that out-of-place furniture is going to become a burden.

Sell what you don’t want or need

If you’re redecorating along with your remodel, you may be wanting to get rid of some of your existing furniture anyway. If that’s the case, sell it now, before you even start. This will get it out of the way and avoid the risk of it being damaged in some way during the remodel.

Use your garage

If you don’t have room to store things in other rooms inside your home, you could always try the garage. It might mean parking your car outside during your remodel, though. Also, keep in mind that your garage is (most likely) not temperature controlled, meaning that your furniture could be exposed to heat and cold. For anything special or delicate, garage storage is probably not your best option.

Container storage

Container storage is a fairly new concept for those looking for temporary storage. Basically, a large, portable storage container is brought to your property for you to use for as long as you need it. If you explore this option, make sure you talk to your neighborhood association about their policies for keeping such units on your property. You’ll also have to consider the fact that although your furniture will be mostly protected from the elements, it may be exposed to extreme temperatures or some moisture.

Self-storage

Renting a self-storage unit can be an easy, affordable solution to your furniture storage woes. Storage facilities are usually conveniently located close to neighborhoods, so your furniture will never be too far away. With advanced security features, you can know that your items are safe and well-protected. And since some facilities offer climate-controlled units, you can store even your most precious items and know that they are completely protected from the elements.
